Southern Portugal

Southern Portugal

Crossbill Nature Guides

Southern Portugal is a superb and rich wildlife destination. The Algarve province and its northern neighbour the Alentejo have a highly diverse landscape from the cliffs, dunes and tidal marshes on the coast to the extensive oak pastures, steppes and rocky hills in the interior. Whether you enjoy birdwatching, searching for orchids or simply a pleasant ramble through a flower-dotted landscape, southern Portugal is a great destination at any season.

  • Landscape history
  • Ecosystems
  • Geology
  • Flora and Fauna
  • Where to watch birds
  • Finding orchids and other wildflowers
  • 23 detailed routes with tips for finding wildlife and 28 site descriptions

This guidebook covers southern Portugal north to Lisbon. Within this region it focuses specifically on four particularly wild and beautiful sections:

  • The the Lisbon-Setúbal area, with its limestone hills and cliffs, and its large wetlands of the Tejo and Sado estuaries.
  • The large, wild and remote southern Alentejo with its steppes and large swathes of montados (dehesas).
  • The famous Algarve, which has numerous small but bird-rich wetlands and limestone hills.
  • The Costa Vicentina the little visited wild Atlantic coast in the southwest.

The Crossbill Guide is a thorough and practical guide for naturalists and nature lovers. It offers background information, routes and site descriptions, plus tips on finding and watching all kinds of wildlife. Each route offers detailed descriptions of where and how to find wildlife and wildflowers. It also shows you the characteristics of the landscape and geology. The book offers a mix of (mostly easy) walking routes and car itineraries with stops and short walks.
